Hon. Dr. Mary Goretti Kitutu, the incumbent Woman Member of Parliament (MP) for Manafwa District, has formally declared her intention to seek re-election in the 2026 general elections under the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party ticket. Dr. Kitutu was among the first aspirants to pick nomination forms from the NRM Electoral Commission headquarters in Kyadondo on Monday, 2nd June 2025.

Speaking after collecting the forms, Dr. Kitutu appealed to her constituents to remain calm and united as she seeks another term to continue representing their interests in Parliament. She reaffirmed her unwavering commitment to championing the empowerment of women in Manafwa District and strengthening environmental conservation efforts — a cause close to her heart, given her professional background as an environmentalist.

“I remain committed to uplifting the women of Manafwa economically, socially, and politically. We must also educate our people on the importance of preserving our environment. It is a shared responsibility for the future of our children,” Dr. Kitutu said.

Dr. Kitutu highlighted the four major constitutional roles of a Member of Parliament, which she vowed to continue executing diligently if granted another term:

Legislation – “As MPs, we debate and pass laws that help steer the country’s development and strengthen the institutions of government,” she noted.

Representation – “I will continue to be the voice of Manafwa in Parliament and ensure that the issues affecting my constituents are brought before the relevant ministries for action.”

Budget Approval – Dr. Kitutu emphasized the critical role MPs play in analyzing and approving the national budget and securing funding for key development programs.

Oversight – “We must hold government agencies accountable, monitor public expenditure, and expose any misuse of government funds or violation of laws,” she added.

Dr. Kitutu’s declaration comes at a time when the ruling NRM party has officially launched its internal process to prepare for the 2026 general elections. On June 2nd, the NRM Electoral Commission, led by Dr. Tanga Odoi, began issuing nomination forms to members interested in contesting for parliamentary seats, district chairperson roles, and other leadership positions under the party’s banner.

The expression of interest period will run until June 15, 2025, with official nominations scheduled for June 17, 2025.

“Any member vying for a parliamentary seat must pay a non-refundable fee of three million shillings,” said Dr. Tanga Odoi while addressing the press. “The exercise has started smoothly and we are happy with the level of interest being shown by our members.”

A Familiar Face in Ugandan Politics

Dr. Mary Goretti Kitutu is no stranger to national service and public leadership. Besides her tenure in Parliament, she has served in various ministerial positions, including as Minister for Energy and Minister for Environment. Her experience in both the legislative and executive arms of government has earned her recognition as a seasoned policymaker and community mobilizer.

With her sights now set on another term in Parliament, Dr. Kitutu says she is confident that the people of Manafwa will entrust her with the mandate to continue serving them.

“This is not just about politics. It’s about service and transformation. I am ready to serve with integrity, passion, and commitment,” she said.

As the 2026 electoral calendar begins to unfold, all eyes will be on Manafwa District and other constituencies across the country to see how the NRM's internal processes shape the political landscape ahead of the national elections.
